How did Lou Gehrig not win MVP in 1934?

It's voted upon by the baseball writers, who are really not the sharpest tools in the shed, and they tend to support the front running teams. Cochrane was catcher *and* manager for the pennant winning Tigers. Not only did Gehrig finish fifth, he wasn't even the top Yankee. Lefty Gomez finished third. Here's the results:
